Overview: Un pomeriggio d’estate Dino, un giovane ferroviere, è fermo col suo merci subito fuori dalla stazione di Pisa. Al di là del muraglione della ferrovia c’è una ragazza affacciata alla finestra. Parte il treno, Dino guarda passare la periferia della città poi si mette a leggere il giornale. “Sarebbe tornato a guardar fuori dopo Lorenzana, nella speranza di veder la figlia del casellante; e poi a Orciano. Lì era sicuro che la moglie del capostazione sarebbe stata alla finestra”.Comincia così Ferrovia locale.Continua raccontando la vita della ragazza affacciata alla finestra, della figlia del casellante, della moglie del capostazione. Da questi si passa ad altri personaggi e ci si sposta a Cecina, a Saline, alla periferia di Roma. Alla fine siamo di nuovo in estate. A dino, in quell’anno, non è successo niente di particolare. Non s’è nemmeno fatto la ragazza. Non perchè non gliene piaccia nessuna: “Gliene piacevano tante. Tutte quelle che vedeva di sfuggita dal treno. Eccola, la sua ragazza: ferma dietro la sbarra di un passaggio a livello, china in un campo a cogliere i pomodori, affacciata alla finestra di un casamento di periferia …”Così, in un seguito veloce di immagini, si riassume per lui il senso dell’esistenza.Neanche agli altri personaggi è accaduto nulla che esca dalla normalità della vita.In Ferrovia locale Cassola ha evitato programmaticamente ogni concessione al romanzesco. E’ certo una narrazione densa di fatti; ma l’autore è stato attento a spogliarli di ogni significato particolare, per darli solo nella dimensione essenziale. Cassola non ha però proposto un rompicapo al lettore. Lo ha invitato, al contrario, ad abbandonarsi alla lettura, facendogli passare davanti tanti frammenti di realtà: un viaggio, una passeggiata, un dissapore coniugale, una cena tra amici, la domenica di una famiglia, la giornata di un vecchio, un paesaggio suburbano, la campagna vista dal treno, e così via. Come le tessere di un mosaico, alla fine questi frammenti si ricompongono svelando il disegno generale: la rappresentazione del quotidiano, che non è il banale e l’insignificante, ma l’essenza stessa della vita e della poesia.

An average read for me. The pacing was a bit slow and I found myself skimming a few pages. It wasn't terrible, just okay. Might work better for someone else, just wasn't completely for me.

I have mixed feelings about this one. It had some good moments, but the overall plot felt a bit disjointed in the second half. Probably won't read it again, but it was an okay way to pass the time.

Finished it in a couple of days. I got really invested in the main character's journey. Everything just clicked for me. Will be looking for more from this author.
