Overview: „Nie było moją ambicją wyczerpanie wszystkich wątków z dziejów miasta. To zresztą niemożliwe. Nawet gdyby książka rozrosła się do rozmiarów kilkutomowej sagi, nie sposób byłoby zawrzeć w niej ogółu wydarzeń i ich bohaterów z długiej, kilkuwiekowej historii Gliwic. Kierując się rozsądkiem oraz biorąc pod uwagę wymogi wydawcy, a przede wszystkim mając na względzie cierpliwość potencjalnego czytelnika, dokonałem autorskiego doboru tych elementów przeszłości, które moim zdaniem najbardziej zaważyły na losach miasta i jego mieszkańców. Odszedłem od zasady równoważności tekstu, stąd też okresom bliższym współczesności poświęcam więcej miejsca niż epokom wcześniejszym […] Tu i ówdzie kieruję jedynie na krótko uwagę czytelnika na niektóre wydarzenia i postacie, które wedle arbitralnego doboru oświetlam mocniej, jako ważne w dziejach miasta i mające wpływ na mieszkańców w dłuższej perspektywie czasowej. Przybliżam również te fakty i miejsca, które już są lub powinny się stać swoistymi »węzłami pamięci«, na podstawie których wciąż na nowo konstruowana jest i przekształcana zbiorowa pamięć współczesnych mieszkańców Gliwic” – pisze we wstępie do książki Bogusław Tracz.„Gliwice. Biografia miasta” jest drugą, po polskojęzycznym wydaniu „Dziejów Miasta Gliwice” Benno Nietschego, historyczną monografią naszego miasta wydaną w ostatnich kilku latach przez Muzeum w Gliwicach. Jako wydawca zastanawiając nad tym, jaka powinna być współcześnie opowiedziana historia miasta, w którym mieszkamy, pragnąłem, aby przede wszystkim miała charakter popularny. Miałem zatem na myśli książkę, która nie uchybiając warsztatowi profesjonalnego historyka, nie zanudziła czytelnika, który historykiem nie jest, a jednak chce być świadomy tego wszystkiego co z miejsca zamieszkania czyni coś znacznie więcej niż tylko jednostkę administracyjną na mapie kraju. Bo Gliwice są naszym większym domem, o którym powinniśmy wiedzieć jak najwięcej. Stąd biografia miasta, czyli niemal rodzinna historia. Chciałem więc, żeby książka była dobrze napisana, nie sprowadzona do suchej bazy danych, które same w sobie nie są interesujące, dopóki ktoś nie powiąże ich ze sobą w narrację, która nas zaciekawi. Marzyła mi się zatem książka z charakterem, nie stroniąca od odautorskiego, czasem wręcz dosadnego komentarza, napisana niepowtarzalnym stylem. Jedynym znanym mi autorem, który mógł sprostać tym wydawniczym marzeniom był Bogusław Tracz, dlatego kilka lat temu poprosiłem go, żeby na nowo opowiedział nam wszystkim historię Gliwic – powiedział Grzegorz Krawczyk, dyrektor Muzeum w Gliwicach.
