Overview: Rimasto isolato per più di due secoli, nel 1854 il Giappone iniziò a instaurare rapporti diplomatici e commerciali con gli Stati Uniti, la Russia, l’Inghilterra e la Francia, oltre ai Paesi Bassi che già in precedenza avevano avuto possibilità di scambi privilegiati. Dopo l’Esposizione universale di Parigi del 1867 la passione per l’arte giapponese, il cosiddetto Japonisme, travolse molti artisti divenendo una vera e propria moda culturale. Il periodo di maggior diffusione di questa tendenza coincise appieno con le varie declinazioni del Liberty.Nella Francia fin de siècle l’influsso dell’arte giapponese, sia a livello formale sia contenutistico, coinvolse i più svariati settori artistici, dalla pittura alla grafica, dalla ceramica all’architettura lasciando il segno in artisti come Édouard Manet, Claude Monet, Edgar Degas e Vincent van Gogh. L’effetto esercitato dalle stampe giapponesi su Whistler – che abbigliava spesso le sue modelle con kimono, paraventi e ventagli giapponesi ripresi dalla sua preziosa collezione – e sugli impressionisti e sui postimpressionisti fu accompagnato dal controcanto dei più autorevoli critici e letterati, da Marcel Proust a Edmond de Goncourt, il quale arrivò ad affermare: “Tutto l’impressionismo è dovuto alla contemplazione e all’imitazione delle stampe luminose del Giappone”.Il volume offre una rassegna inedita dell’impatto del Giappone sulle arti figurative europee, dalla Francia all’Inghilterra, dall’Impero Austro-Ungarico alla Germania e fino a Boemia e Moravia, in un arco temporale che va dal 1860 al 1915 attraverso un vasto repertorio di opere – dipinti, sculture, ceramiche, manifesti e incisioni – realizzate sotto la diretta influenza di grandi artisti come Katsushika Hokusai, Utagawa Hiroshige e Kitagawa Utamaro.Rovigo, Palazzo Roverella, settembre 2019 - gennaio 2020

Such a great read. The author did a great job wrapping everything up at the end. No weird plot holes left behind. Definitely recommend it if you like this genre.

I liked it for the most part. Interesting premise and executed fairly well. Just a few slow chapters here and there. Still a good book.
