Overview: Like so many saints before him, Samuel Rutherford did his best work while he was imprisoned for the gospel. While in exile from his hometown, he wrote hundreds of letters to his friends and members of his congregation. These letters were treasured up and printed several years after his death in 1661. From this, “the most remarkable series of devotional letters that the literature of the Reformed churches can show,” Christians of all walks have drawn strength. The Loveliness of Christ is a collection of short excerpts from these letters “in which some of Rutherford s most helpful thoughts are allowed to stand out in their unadorned wisdom and power. Those familiar with Andrew Bonar s great nineteenth-century collection of the Letters of Samuel Rutherford will feel that this setting of brief quotations makes Rutherford’s words sparkle like diamonds on a dark cloth in a jeweller’s shop. Honestly one of the better books I've read lately. It has a good balance of dialogue and description. Everything felt like it moved at the right speed. Worth the time and money.

An average read for me. The writing was fine, but I didn't feel very connected to the characters. They felt a bit flat. Might work better for someone else, just wasn't completely for me.

Finished it in a couple of days. The author did a great job wrapping everything up at the end. No weird plot holes left behind. Worth the time and money.

I liked it for the most part. The middle dragged a tiny bit, but the ending totally made up for it. A solid 4 stars from me.
