Overview: Born in rural Kentucky, Mickey Hess grew up listening to the militant rap of Public Enemy while living in a place where the state song still included the word “darkies.” Listening to hip-hop made Hess think about what it meant to be white, while the environment in small-town Kentucky encouraged him to avoid or even mock such self-examination. If it weren’t for hip-hop, Hess could have slipped into a lifetime of small-mindedness and casual racism. Instead, he teaches Hip-Hop and American Culture at a university in New Jersey.With America’s history of cultural appropriation, we’ve come to mistrust white people who participate deeply in black culture, but backing away from black culture is too easy a solution. Glad someone recommended this to me. The author did a great job wrapping everything up at the end. No weird plot holes left behind. Glad I picked this up.

I was pleasantly surprised. The pacing was spot on and the characters felt real. I didn't find myself getting bored at any point. Will be looking for more from this author.

I have mixed feelings about this one. Some parts were interesting, while others were a bit of a slog to get through. Probably won't read it again, but it was an okay way to pass the time.

Good, but not quite perfect. Interesting premise and executed fairly well. Just a few slow chapters here and there. Not bad at all.

Finished it in a couple of days. I got really invested in the main character's journey. Everything just clicked for me. Definitely recommend it if you like this genre.

It was okay. It had some good moments, but the overall plot felt a bit disjointed in the second half. Might work better for someone else, just wasn't completely for me.
