Overview: This thriller, the first fictional book written by the author, Jack Carr, is a chilling story involving Michael and the effects of his mental illness. It is a story of love mixed with tragedy, normality mixed with abnormality, a loss of control leading to murder and sadness. Mental illness is difficult to diagnose and it is even more difficult to predict: who, what, or where, it will strike next. In this story Michael is driven by ‘the voices’ that tell him what to do; with tragic consequences. He selects Brightlingsea at random and it becomes the place where story unfolds. He meets Lucy in the mental home and she unwittingly becomes his accomplice. The author has been involved with mental health for 20 years seeing friends suffering, and later after training as an advocate, making judgments as to whether a person is ready to re-join society. This same society that locked these patients up for life in years gone by, despite the fact that one in four of the population will suffer some form of mental distress in their lifetime. It is a fact that some extreme cases must be confined for life in places like Broadmoor. Brains are not like bones they cannot always be healed. Michael is such a man, rare, but it happens and the story explores the consequences.This story has no basis in fact, the characters are entirely fictional and Brightlingsea was chosen as a setting for the story because the author knows its history and geography and likes it.

An average read for me. The pacing was a bit slow and I found myself skimming a few pages. It wasn't terrible, just okay. A generous 3 stars.

I was pleasantly surprised. I got really invested in the main character's journey. Everything just clicked for me. A solid 5/5 for me.

Finished it in a couple of days. The pacing was spot on and the characters felt real. I didn't find myself getting bored at any point. Worth the time and money.
