Overview: Antoni Tapies was one of the great painters of the 20th century. He died only two years ago, so I suppose I can give hi the 21st century, too. Very rarely does one find such an accomplished genius in one medium who can also master another, but in his case verbal and literary self-expression presented another level of accomplishment. Because he was so well-read in many disciplines his essays take the reader to historical roots, spiritual disciplines, and scientific comparisons. As most of us are uneducated regarding the history and nature of the Catalan culture, his references and explanations teach us about his pride and a deep personal identity. Just one volume of these writings is a significant undertaking, almost a discipline in itself. But it pays off in many ways. Here in this tiny tidbit from an interview in which he was asked if there was a maxim found as a young man that had somehow determine your life path. " . . .if you press me I could quote "Know Thyself." More than becoming an artist, more than learning to paint, I have always been preoccupied by my inner improvement. Because to deeply improve implies attaining knowledge. We must all awaken in ourselves the knowledge and love preached by the great sages. You need not only the commandments for the masses, the ideologies, when it comes to changing mankind: you also need a great individual work. Art can really educate, but painting and art in general is but one door leading to another door. After all, it is the spectators who have to do the work. Art is only a helper." Looking at his work, one is not surprised to find in Tapies an appreciation for the esoteric world, deep consideration of traditions like alchemy and the transformative lives of the great mystics. " . . . the attitude of the great mystics, that is, the mystical phenomenon allows me to explain the process of artistic creation." Good, but not quite perfect. Writing is good, just wish there was a bit more depth in certain parts. Still kept my attention though. I'd probably recommend it to a friend.

Honestly one of the better books I've read lately. I loved how the story unfolded. It kept me guessing without being too confusing. Would probably read it again at some point.

Such a great read. The pacing was spot on and the characters felt real. I didn't find myself getting bored at any point. Worth the time and money.

It was just alright. The writing was fine, but I didn't feel very connected to the characters. They felt a bit flat. It's fine if you have nothing else to read.

Glad someone recommended this to me. The author did a great job wrapping everything up at the end. No weird plot holes left behind. Would probably read it again at some point.
