Overview: Some of the same characters of the author's Holly Hotel (1947) appear again in this Scottish mystery pleasantly charged with the atmosphere of the heath, the brogue and a bit of foreign intrigue. Mollie Maitland and her mother who live outside Whistleblow are agog when the famous engineer Sir Denzil Fortescue and his family move into the supposedly haunted Captain's House. Suspense mounts when the legend of the Captain's murdered cabin boy seems borne out in the person of a young boy the Fortescues are secretly harboring. Two mysterious foreigners arrive and bring skirmishes, a capture and the discovery that they are from Danubia, the country of Sir Denzil's latest project, and are part of an insurgent group.

I liked it for the most part. The middle dragged a tiny bit, but the ending totally made up for it. Still a good book.

Really enjoyed this one. I loved how the story unfolded. It kept me guessing without being too confusing. Definitely recommend it if you like this genre.

Honestly one of the better books I've read lately. It has a good balance of dialogue and description. Everything felt like it moved at the right speed. Would probably read it again at some point.
