Overview: Abdellatif Laâbi est né à Fès en 1942, au temps du protectorat français au Maroc. Son père est artisan sellier, et sa mère, femme au foyer. Il sort à peine de l’enfance lorsque son pays accède à l’Indépendance. Après des études universitaires à la faculté des lettres de Rabat, il est nommé professeur de français dans un lycée de la capitale. Sa vocation pour la culture se décide tôt. Encore étudiant, il est l'un des créateurs du Théâtre universitaire marocain, qui met en scène des pièces de Bertolt Brecht et de Fernando Arrabal. À la radio nationale, il anime brièvement deux émissions littéraires. En 1966, il fonde avec un groupe de poètes et de peintres la revue Souffles, qui aura un vrai rayonnement, notamment à l’échelle du Maghreb. Au Maroc, elle jouera un rôle déterminant dans le renouvellement des formes d’expression littéraires et artistiques, ensuite dans la contestation de l’ordre social et politique qui régnait à cette époque. La revue est interdite en 1972 et Laâbi est arrêté, torturé, puis condamné à dix ans de prison. Libéré en 1980, suite à une campagne internationale en sa faveur, il quitte le Maroc cinq ans plus tard pour s’installer en banlieue parisienne. Dès lors, son œuvre, essentiellement poétique, touche néanmoins à tous les genres : roman, théâtre, livres pour la jeunesse, écrits sur la culture, essais politiques… Pour autant, il ne renonce pas à ses engagements d’intellectuel citoyen. Ses interventions se multiplient, tant en France qu'au Maroc, contre le despotisme, les obscurantismes de tout bord, et en faveur de la dignité humaine, des libertés et du dialogue des cultures. L’anthologie personnelle qui paraît en Poésie/Gallimard a pour but d’arpenter le continent poétique d'Abdellatif Laâbi sur un trajet de plus de vingt ans et de se laisser traverser par sa parole rebelle autant que généreuse, parole «adressée», ouverte au partage, qui apporte une réponse sans qu’il soit besoin de discourir. «Lecture roborative, souligne Françoise Ascal dans sa préface, qui lève les doutes quant au pouvoir des mots. La suspicion contemporaine à leur égard, souvent martelée par les poètes eux-mêmes, en est désarmée. La poésie de Laâbi est incarnée, vibrante de toutes les passions humaines, elle va droit à l’essentiel, n’a peur de rien, se joue des modes esthétiques, du poétiquement correct, elle témoigne avec simplicité de ce qui est complexe, elle explore sans répit la condition humaine, entre misère et grandeur pascaliennes, et souffle sur nos capacités de résistance comme sur des braises.»

Abdellatif Laâbi is a writer and avid reader based in the Pacific Northwest. Before pursuing writing full-time, they spent over a decade working in education. When not working on their next book, Abdellatif Laâbi can usually be found hiking with their dog or trying out new coffee shops in their neighborhood.

It was okay. The writing was fine, but I didn't feel very connected to the characters. They felt a bit flat. Might work better for someone else, just wasn't completely for me.
