Overview: Kesedaran bagi mengangkat Islam sebagai cara hidup memerlukan satu daya usaha yang tinggi. Islam sebagai sebuah agama yang menekankan kesepaduan yang merentasi batas peribadatan khusus perlu mendapat tempat sewajarnya. Terdapat usaha bagi menyudutkan Islam supaya dilihat tidak lagi relevan. Islam cuba dipaparkan sebagai sebuah agama yang ketinggalan, jumud, dan kejam. Islam menaja keganasan, kezaliman, dan kepura-puraan. Keadaan itu lebih menjadi-jadi selepas era perang dingin tamat. Lalu, Barat mengalihkan tumpuan dengan melihat Islam sebagai pesaing baru. Fenomena ini diburukkan lagi dengan kelemahan umat Islam dalam menguasai dan bersaing menggunakan senjata baru seperti media, ekonomi, dan budaya. Dalam pada itu, imej Islam terus dilanyak bagi menggunakan pelbagai istilah seperti pengganas, ektremis, dan sebagainya. Apabila kejadian ini menjadi buruk, umat Islam mula bertindak balas. Umat Islam terpecah sekurang-kurangnya kepada empat kelompok bagi menanggapi serangan Barat:Menjadi kelompok pengkagum Barat. Mereka turut sama dalam pesta menghina dan merendah-rendahkan imej Islam. Kelompok yang berhadapan secara tegang dengan Barat. Menyerang balas dengan ganas sehingga mengangkat senjata. Mereka ini adalah yang digelar oleh Barat sebagai kelompok pengganas dan militan. Kelompok yang tidak mempedulikan segala serangan daripada musuh Islam. Mereka sibuk dengan ibadah yang bersifat ritual semata-mata. Pada mereka cukup sekadar menjaga diri. Akhirnya, mereka hidup dalam pemencilan yang tersendiri.Kelompok yang berkomunikasi dengan Barat daripada sudut idea, budaya, dan bahasa.Kelompok ini percaya, dialog dan wacana adalah satu kaedah yang mesti digunakan dengan sebaik-baiknya sementelah Barat sememangnya bersifat terbuka. Oleh itu, kelompok ini cuba menggunakan ruang ini sebaik-baiknya dengan keyakinan bahawa Islam mempunyai semua jawapan kepada persoalan hidup manusia.Oleh yang demikian, bagi memperluaskan usaha berkomunikasi dengan dunia yang semakin rencam, maka kemunculan pemikiran-pemikiran baru yang mengangkat wacana maqasid syariah menjadi lebih bermakna dan segar.
