Overview: Paar aastat tagasi leidis Tõnu Õnnepalu ühest vanast Hiiumaa aidalobudikust kirjad. Vend Jakobi Ameerikast saadetud kirjad teisele, Villemile, kes elas Hiiumaal. Need olid kirjutatud aastatel 1915–1939, nii et see oli aastakümnete pikkune kirjavahetus. „Juba esimesi lugedes tajusin, et tegemist on erakordse tunnistusega – just oma võltsimatus lihtsuses ja harilikkuses. Niisuguseid kirju ei saa välja mõelda. Nagu üldse ei saa välja mõelda elu, mida me päevast päeva ja aastast aastasse elame, teadmata, mis saab “pärast”,“ on autor kirjutanud näidendi tutvustuseks.Jakob oli meremees ja teda viis tee Ameerikasse, kus ta püüdis oma elu sisse seada „pisnest“ tehes. Villem käis I maailmasõjas tsaariarmees ja siis ka Vabadussõjas iseseisva Eesti eest. Ja seejärel jäi kodusaarele asundustalu pidama ja ema eest hoolt kandma. Kaks venda, kaks elulugu, kaks kahekümnenda sajandi eesti mehe saatust – ja nende kaudu ka Eesti saatus. Epiloogiga sõjajärgsetest aastatest, sest viimane kiri on Ameerikas posti pandud 1967. aastal. See napp näidend on ehe ja liigutav. Tõnu Õnnepalu on oma näitemängu allika kohta öelnud nõnda: „Vanad kirjad rittaseatuna on elluärganud hääl minevikust, inimelu vahetu tunnistus.“„Vennas“ võitis peapreemia 2012. a Monomaffia teatrifestivali ja Eesti Teatri Agentuuri näidendivõistlusel ja seda esitati Eesti Draamateatri Esimesel lugemisel oktoobris 2012.

Honestly one of the better books I've read lately. I got really invested in the main character's journey. Everything just clicked for me. Definitely recommend it if you like this genre.

Pretty good overall. The middle dragged a tiny bit, but the ending totally made up for it. Not bad at all.
