Overview: “Patimile după Iov” este romanul-frescă ce ne lipsea şi pe care îl aşteptăm de mult. Subiectul se axează pe două dintre cele mai frământate secole prin care a trecut Basarabia – de la anexarea acestui teritoriu de către ruşi până în contemporaneitate (războiul de pe Nistru). Ucigătoarele zigzaguri ale istoriei – a doua răpire a sudului Basarabiei (1878), Primul Război Mondial şi rebeliunea bolşevică, 28 iunie 1940, al Doilea Război şi revenirea „tătarilor” pe tancuri etc. – trec prin fier şi sânge neamul Iovilor, ţărani avuţi din sudul Basarabiei. Acolada narativă cuprinde câteva generaţii ale acestei dinastii: de la stră-străbunicul Ioan Iov, „care a votat Unirea Principatelor în 1859”, până la ultimul vlăstar, Mitru, ziarist ce transmite ştiri pentru Europa Liberă în toiul luptelor cu separatiştii transnistreni.Romanul are două mize livreşti distincte: una biblică, profund simbolică, reangajând mitul lui Iov, omul care avea de toate şi trăia în îndestulare, preamulţumit de norocosul său destin. La un moment dat însă binele se întoarce în antipodul său, Iov fiind lovit de toate nenorocirile. I se ia pe rând totul, personajul fiind supus celor mai devastatoare suferinţe. Proza lui Val Butnaru reactivează parcă scenariul biblic, blestemul abătându-se asupra întregului neam de ţărani din Bugeac, urmându-i din tată în fiu. Nicio pacoste posibilă nu-i ocoleşte: jaful, violul, exilul, trădarea, recluziunea, barbaria străinului şi ticăloşia aproapelui, dezrădăcinarea etnică etc., etc.Dincolo de această pistă veterotestamentară, există o alta, cultă, de ordin strict literar, prin discreta şi aluziva referire – mai mult în subtext – la celebrul Deşertul tătarilor de Dino Buzzati. Numai că ceea ce pentru sublocotenentul Drogo era o iluzorie ameninţare (pe care tânărul militar şi-o dorea febril!), pentru ţăranii din Bisericuţa invazia e un pericol cât se poate de iminent – „tătarii” năvălesc periodic aducând cu ei pârjol şi înjosire.Val Butnaru îmbină captivant realitatea istorică şi ficţiunea, romanul având mai multe faţete – de saga istorică a unei seminţii strivite între plăcile tectonice ale vremurilor potrivnice, de şarjă politică tratată uneori cu instrumentele publicisticii, de polar nelipsit de suspans, dar şi de epic răscolitor, cu scrâşnet dureros în confruntarea cu fatala neaşezare a ţinutului. Glad someone recommended this to me. The author did a great job wrapping everything up at the end. No weird plot holes left behind. Definitely recommend it if you like this genre.

Took me a few chapters to get into it, but it was worth it. I liked the main character, though some of the side plots were just okay. Not bad at all.

Not bad, but not my favorite. The pacing was a bit slow and I found myself skimming a few pages. It wasn't terrible, just okay. It's fine if you have nothing else to read.
