Overview: Johann Christian Reinhart war einer der großen Landschaftsmaler und Radierer der Goethezeit. Geboren 1761 als Sohn eines Pfarrers im kleinen oberfränkischen Hof (das er keineswegs so »abscheulich« findet wie der zwei Jahre jüngere Jean Paul) führt ihn sein Weg über Studien- und lebenslustige Wanderjahre in Leipzig, Dresden und Meiningen 1789 nach Italien. »Rom ist mein Vaterland geworden«, schreibt er nach Hause und er sollte es nie wieder verlassen. 58 Jahre lang hat er in der Stadt am Tiber gelebt; 1847 wurde er dort auf dem Ausländerfriedhof an der Cestius-Pyramide zu Grabe getragen. Über Generationen hinweg war er das bewunderte »Kunsthaupt« (Ludwig Richter) der deutschen Fremdenkolonie gewesen, Erfinder der feuchtfröhlichen Frühlingsfeste in den Grotten von Cervara und Mitbegründer des »Deutschen Künstlervereins«. Mit seinen »Malerisch radierten Prospekten von Italien« hat er die Campagna von Rom, die er zu Pferd und als leidenschaftlicher Jäger durchstreifte, dem deutschen Publikum nahegebracht. Als Bayerischer Hofmaler schuf er für König Ludwig I. u.a. die »Vier Ansichten von der Villa Malta in Rom« (München, Neue Pinakothek). Dieter Richter schildert Reinhart als Künstler und Lebenskünstler, als lebensfrohen, streitbaren Freigeist, einen »Erzketzer« (wie er sich einmal nannte) im päpstlichen Rom. Sein Haus auf dem Pincio war geselliger Mittelpunkt der internationalen »Künstlerrepublik«, zahlreichen Reisenden blieb er zudem als ortskundiger Cicerone durch die Stadt und die Landschaften der Albaner Berge in Erinnerung. Ein weitgespannter Briefwechsel, u.a. mit Friedrich Schiller, den er vergebens nach Rom zu ziehen versuchte, verband ihn mit Schriftstellern, Verlegern und Künstlern, nicht zuletzt mit dem Kreis um den bayerischen König Ludwig I. It was just alright. The pacing was a bit slow and I found myself skimming a few pages. It wasn't terrible, just okay. A generous 3 stars.

Glad someone recommended this to me. The writing style is very engaging. It’s easy to follow but still has a lot of depth. A solid 5/5 for me.

Finished it in a couple of days. It has a good balance of dialogue and description. Everything felt like it moved at the right speed. Definitely recommend it if you like this genre.
