Overview: Meine Großeltern lernten sich in einem Ruderclub in Frankfurt an der Oder kennen. Meine Oma Ilse erzählte gern voller Stolz, wie sie sich im Einer auf den Fluss hinauswagte und unter den Bögen der großen Brücke hindurchglitt, die die beiden Teile der Stadt verband. Heute, fast 90 Jahre später, ziehen noch immer Ruderer auf der Oder ihre Bahnen, aber das Viertel am östlichen Ufer ist ein polnischer Ort namens Słubice, und der Fluss markiert die Grenze zwischen Polen und Deutschland. Man kann die Geschichte Polens, die wir Ihnen in diesem Heft näherbringen wollen, auch als Geschichte seiner Grenzen erzählen. Unsere Kartografin Stefanie Peters hat sie in zehn eigens angefertigten Karten Angefangen beim slawischen Fürsten Mieszko I., der um 960 das heutige Zentralpolen beherrschte, über das goldene Zeitalter des Reichs während der Renaissance, als Polen-Litauen der größte Flächenstaat Europas war, bis zum Jahr 1795, als Preußen, Russen und Habsburger mit imperialer Habgier das Land gänzlich von der Karte tilgten. Erst nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg sollte Polen wieder erstehen. Damals kam in Deutschland der perfide Begriff auf, das Nachbarland sei nicht mehr als ein "Saisonstaat", eine vorübergehende Erscheinung. Das Gegenteil ist wahr, wie Sie auf den folgenden Seiten lesen können. Seit mehr als 1000 Jahren ist Polen eine Macht im Herzen Europas, mal stärker, mal schwächer, aber immer auf die Bewahrung seiner Eigenständigkeit bedacht. Aus deutscher Sicht ist es über weite Strecken eine geteilte Geschichte (nicht zufällig ist unser Wort "Grenze" ein Lehnwort aus dem Slawischen). Tatsächlich aber sind wir wohl mit keinem anderen unserer Nachbarländer derart eng verbunden – durch Familiengeschichten, aber auch durch historische Schuld. Mein Großvater, dessen Vornamen ich trage, war einer jener deutschen Soldaten, die am 1. September 1939 in Polen einfielen. Der Feldzug war der Auftakt einer Schreckenszeit, in der den Polen von Deutschen unfassbares Leid angetan wurde. Wie wir Nachgeborenen im 21. Jahrhundert mit diesem Erbe umgehen sollen, haben wir mit dem Historiker Jan C. Behrends besprochen. Er lehrt an einer Institution, die mit ihrer grenzüberschreitenden Ausrichtung viel Hoffnung auf eine friedliche Zukunft der Europa-Universität Viadrina in Frankfurt an der Oder.
