Overview: Pada tahun 1970-an, ritel modern di Indonesia mulai berkembang ditandai dengan dibukanya gerai pertama oleh Dick Gelael di jalan Falatehan, Kebayoran Baru, dan KemChick yang digarap oleh Bob Sadino di kawasan Kemang, keduanya di Jakarta Selatan. Pada waktu yang bersamaan pula, tanggal 23 Agustus 1971, Hero yang dikelola oleh almarhum MS Kurnia membuka gerai pertamanya di Falatehan. Strategi bisnis yang ditawarkan masing-masing perintis ritel modern juga bermacam-macam. Gelael, misalnya, membidik konsumen menengah-atas di kawasan elite kota-kota besar. Kemchick milik Bob Sadino ingin menjadikan supermarketnya sebagai tujuan utama berbelanja bagi para ekspatriat. Sedangkan Hero membidik kalangan menengah-atas, namun lebih fleksibel dalam pemilihan lokasi. Bisnis swalayan di era tersebut bukan perkara gampang karena beberapa alasan. Pertama, para pemasok belum terbiasa dengan pola kerja pasar swalayan. Kedua, konsumen pun belum terbiasa berbelanja dengan cara mengambil sendiri barang belanjaan tanpa dilayani. Butuh waktu untuk menanamkan persepsi berbelanja ritel modern di benak konsumen. Di dalam buku ini diuraikan bahwa kendala budaya berbelanja di atas ditutupi oleh persepsi umum konsumen Indonesia yang mencintai belanja dan menganggap belanja sebagai rekreasi. Arah angin pun berpihak pada pelaku bisnis ritel. Pemerintah pada masa Orde Baru pun tergerak untuk ikut mendorong sektor ini. Lalu dibuatlah kebijakan ekonomi pada masa itu yang sangat kondusif bagi investor asing yang ingin menanamkan modal di Indonesia. Selain itu pada tahun 1980-an, pemerintah memberikan berbagai kemudahan fasilitas bagi perusahaan yang ingin menjual saham ke lantai bursa. Took me a few chapters to get into it, but it was worth it. Writing is good, just wish there was a bit more depth in certain parts. Still kept my attention though. Enjoyable weekend read.
