Overview: Dit boek legt de bijl aan de wortel van een van de meest hardnekkige schijnproblemen in het hedendaagse politieke en sociale denken: de maatschappelijke obsessie met 'integratie'. Het biedt een even scherpzinnige als radicale kritiek op het in sociologie en sociale filosofie nog altijd aanwezige organicistische denken en op het verschijnsel van sociale hypochondrie als typische hedendaagse vorm daarvan.Nu de samenleving, na het einde van de ideologie, geen doel meer kent en niet langer in vooruitgang gelooft, is het sociaal lichaam tot stilstand gekomen en onderzoekt het zichzelf op allerhande kwalen. De angst voor criminaliteit en terrorisme, de islamofobie, de aanhoudende bezorgdheid omtrent 'integratie' en de reflectie op de 'culturele canon' worden in Schinkels fascinerende 'archeologie van het heden' geanalyseerd als uitingen van obsessieve zelfgerichtheid. Deze sociale hypo-chondria (letterlijk: onderbuikgevoelens) produceert onafgebroken tegenstellingen tussen 'de samenleving' en de 'niet geïntegreerden' die 'buiten de samenleving staan'. Ze is een manier om angstvallig vast te houden aan een identiteit van 'de samenleving' in een tijd waarin globalisering en verlies van ideologie die samenleving meer en meer implausibel maken. Zo vindt sociale hypochondrie bijvoorbeeld uiting in culturisme, een culturele variant van racisme, dat een 'dominante cultuur' definieert door die bijvoorbeeld af te zetten tegen 'de cultuur van de Islam' van 'niet geïntegreerde immigranten'. Tegenover de metafysica van de maatschappij introduceert Schinkel een nieuw vocabulaire voor de theoretische sociologie en sociale filosofie; tegenover sociaal hypochondrisch denken over 'integratie' stelt hij een integer denken. Dit is de sociale diagnose die alle sociale diagnostiek overbodig maakt.Dit met humor en ironie geschreven en in menig opzicht vernieuwende boek wil een uitdaging zijn aan ieder die zich met thema's als 'integratie' en 'multiculturaliteit' bezighoudt.
