Overview: Ever since Pearl Harbor, the roots of Japan's aggressive, expansionist foreign policy have been traced to its concern over its acute economic vulnerability. Historian Michael Barnhart tests this assumption by examining the events leading up to World War II in the context of Japan's quest for economic security. Drawing on a wide array of Japanese and American sources, his is the first English-language book on the war's origins to be based on research in archives on both sides of the Pacific.Barnhart focuses on the critical years from 1938 to 1941 as he investigates the birth and growth of interwar Japan's drive for autarky and the ways in which this drive shaped its internal and external policies. I was pleasantly surprised. I loved how the story unfolded. It kept me guessing without being too confusing. Definitely recommend it if you like this genre.

Honestly one of the better books I've read lately. The pacing was spot on and the characters felt real. I didn't find myself getting bored at any point. Glad I picked this up.
