En préparation depuis huit ans par un trio d’universitaires spécialistes de la littérature québécoise, cet ouvrage de près de 700 pages propose une relecture des textes littéraires québécois, des origines à nos jours, avec un souci constant de les remettre dans le contexte de leur époque. Cette monumentale synthèse tient aussi compte de la littérature québécoise d’expression anglaise ou migrante, des littératures acadienne et franco-ontarienne. Au fil de son histoire, la littérature québécoise s’est exprimée à travers plusieurs genres qui sont ici explorés, fiction, essais, journaux, récits, théâtre, et à travers de nombreux débats, revues et mouvements qui sont aussi abordés.Cet ouvrage couvre la littérature québécoise des origines à nos jours. Les auteurs ont distingué cinq grandes périodes qui ont marqué notre littérature : la découverte (1534-1763), le projet d’une littérature nationale (1763-1895), l’entrée dans la modernité, l’attrait de Paris, le monde en crise et la Seconde Guerre mondiale (1895-1945), l’avènement d’une littérature « québécoise » (1945-1980), et la période contemporaine caractérisée par un décentrement de la littérature, par un pluralisme exacerbé et par une expansion phénoménale de la production littéraire.Depuis l’Histoire de la littérature française au Québec, dirigée par Pierre de Grandpré en 1967, aucune synthèse de grande envergure sur ce sujet n’est parue au Québec.
